Choosing the Right Mineral Makeup Foundation

There's no doubt that mineral makeup is becoming the rage. And there's a reason for that: women are finding these powder foundations to be easy to apply, actually fun to apply, and able to provide a smooth, flawless finish. In addition, women appreciate the fact that they contain natural sun protection. And many have noticed that over time their skin has fewer breakouts, and a decrease in any redness (which some call rosacea) - even with no makeup on!

Here's the problem. With this much popularity, there are so many products on the market right now. How does a busy woman choose the mineral foundation that is right for her?

Steps in Choosing a Mineral Foundation

The first thing you should know is that most online mineral companies and almost all the retail stores will accept returns. So you can usually buy a product with confidence, knowing that returns are accepted gracefully.

Second, some online companies, like Monave Minerals, Afterglow Cosmetics, Suncat Minerals, Cleopatra's Choice, and many others, offer samples for sale at a low cost. That means you don't have to commit to a product right away. You can send for samples from each of these companies, spend very little, and actually use the cosmetics before buying the regular size.

Another way to sample before buying, is to go to an Ulta or Sephora outlet, if there is one near you, and try the makeup on right there in the store. The benefit, of course, is that the salespeople really know their products, and can help you make your choices. Bare Minerals is in both these stores, and Urban Decay can be sampled at Sephora.

Foundation Colors and Undertones

If you want to choose a mineral foundation online, you'll have more companies to choose from. The websites have great photos of the colors - although some monitors may interpret colors slightly differently than other monitors. With that in mind, the mineral companies also give a written description of their colors. They'll tell you how sheer or opaque you can expect the product's coverage to be; they'll tell you what the finish looks like (whether it's matte, semi-matte, dewy, or lightly luminescent). They may also say whether a particular color falls into a warm or a cool category. Warm colors have bases that are yellow or gold; cool colors have bases that are more blue. Don't worry - these yellows and blues don't show up in the makeup. But they do give you that much more information to use when making your choices. Women with redness issues might choose a yellow-based foundation, which could cover the red better.

Kits

Some companies sell their minerals as part of a larger kit. Sheer Cover and Lauren Hutton Makeup do that. The advantage here is that they provide more than one shade of foundation and concealer - so you can mix them to get just the right shade for your unique needs.

Application Tips

When trying on a mineral foundation for the first time, make sure your skin is moist but not oily. If you use moisturizer, make sure it's completely soaked in before using the mineral powder. The brush you use - even on samples - is very important. Experts recommend a Taklon kabuki, which is a soft, rounded and very tightly packed brush. Synthetic brushes are far superior to animal hair brushes - they shed less, they're less apt to pick up contaminants, and of course they're vegan, which means animals do not have to be hurt for us to be beautiful.

Also when trying on a test foundation, apply just one thin coat at a time. You can always layer the makeup if you want more coverage.

After you've applied your test foundation, look at it in different lights - sunlight, fluorescent light, and incandescent light. Then apply a setting, or finishing powder, if you want more of a matte finish, and check your new makeup in the three different lights again. Foundation without setting powder on top gives a very different look than foundation with the addition of a finishing powder.

Working with mineral makeup is fun. Having a flawless complexion is fun. Mixing colors and experimenting with different brands is fun. With minerals, the tedium of daily makeup application has been replaced by creativity, and a shortened application time.

Bathroom Lighting Tips

Home lighting means providing beauty as well as light, but unlike other rooms, your bathroom lighting should be first and foremost designed for function. But keep in mind that it can be beautiful as well.

The bathroom is where you and your family prepare yourselves to greet the world and so it needs the right kind of lighting. At the same time the modern bathroom is also a place to relax and where you go to read a book or simply to lie and wash away the cares of the day. Doing it right means achieving a balance between these two things - on the one hand a bright light for practical uses and on the other a softer light for more relaxing moments. In other words, combine task lighting for those practical moments, ambient lighting for general use and accent lighting for when you want to highlight certain areas.

This article will focus only on the task lighting in a bathroom. In the bathroom, especially around the vanity mirrors, task lighting is critical. When shaving, preening or plucking, you want the light to be bright enough to reveal even the sneakiest of chin hairs, yet natural enough to avoid those embarrassing makeup muck-ups.

Here are some suggestions to improve your bathroom lighting:

1. Remember you don't want your lights to be too strong or too dim, and lighting that comes from the sides is generally more flattering than lighting that comes from above (there's a reason lights run up and down the side of mirrors in Hollywood dressing rooms!). It will cast an even light across the face and eliminate shadows.

And, consider installing a small lit concave mirror near the main vanity mirror. The concave curvature of the mirror will magnify what you see in the mirror and the additional light will help improve the lighting for special tasks such as shaving or applying makeup.

2. Whether you choose incandescent, LED or even fluorescent bulbs, make sure the light they emit is within the natural daylight spectrum. Bulbs that are mostly yellow or white will not reflect your natural skin tone.

It is recommended that special neodymium light bulbs be used in the vanity fixtures since they provide excellent light that very closely simulates sunlight. A neodymium light bulb is an incandescent light bulb that has a slight bluish tint to it. The bluish tint, created by a thin coating of neodymium inside the glass envelope, will cause the light bulb to provide less yellowish light like a standard incandescent light bulb and, therefore, be more like the sun.

3. Recessed lighting is an excellent choice for lighting up showers, tubs and toilet areas. In the shower and tub, recessed lighting can be angled to bring out tile design, stone inlays and other decorative design features in those areas. And anyone with a full magazine rack next to the stool can imagine what a recessed light overhead can do for that space as well.

4. In the mood In the bathroom, your ambient (or general) lighting should be soft, warm and relaxing. A lot of the time, if the bathroom isn't very big, the vanity lighting will be the lighting solution for the whole bathroom. If this isn't sufficient, low-lying LED strips or step lights will give the room a soft, candle-like glow and create the perfect atmosphere for those long, luxurious soaks in the tub. These can be recessed into the wall under a floating vanity, or incorporated into some joinery.

For pure mood lighting, here I suggest wall-mounted fittings. These will give just a nice, overall glow to the bathroom but not necessarily be aimed at anything in particular. However, sticking with a discreet fixture that emits white rather than coloured light. It's best to keep bathroom lighting fixtures as simple as possible, so they're easy to combine with other things in the room, adding I normally recommend a chrome finish or brushed nickel to match the tapware.

5. If you dread the blinding glare that greets you on a 2 am toilet run, consider connecting your ambient lights to a lighted switch. It makes late night trips to the bathroom a lot easier, since you won't have to swing your arm up and down the wall like a bird in flight to find the switch.
And a dimmer switch isn't a bad idea either, so you can set your bathroom lighting to the proper mood. This way also makes you won't have to fumble for switches or light up the entire house every time nature calls every night. Also making sure you look presentable Monday morning takes a lot more light than that Saturday evening soak in the tub. A dimmer switch gives you the best of both worlds.

6. Splash out Just because the bathroom is primarily a place of function doesn't mean you can't inject it with a bit of fun and funk as well.

It is suggested using accent lighting, such as spotlights, to highlight any interesting tiling or artwork. This will help create an interesting focal point and give the room some depth. If it's a larger bathroom you might also want to incorporate chandeliers to add that glamorous, decorative touch.

The Vanity Myth

There are many misconceptions when it comes to the practice of permanent makeup
or cosmetic tattooing. It is the same myth that pervades the medical field of
cosmetic and plastic surgery. There is a belief in America that if a person engages
in procedures such as permanent eyeliner, permanent lipstick or other cosmetic
changes that they are driven by vanity or are shallow inside. Although I agree that
there is a portion of people who will never be satisfied with their appearance, I do
not believe these people are the majority. Most of the clients I see in my practice
are men and women who are in the process of learning to love themselves more and
through this process they eventually gain more confidence and experience a better
quality of life.

Let Your Natural Beauty Emerge

There are many reasons to have permanent makeup. Illness, injury and a desire for
practicality, efficiency or increased confidence are just a few. All of these
motivations have less to do with vanity and more to do with building self-esteem
and self-appreciation. Loving yourself is a healing process and I am lucky to work
in a field where I can participate in this process with my clientele. I work, not only
with their faces but I also connect with their individual energy. I use my artistic eye
for color and symmetry to apply the permanent cosmetics, but I also access my

great look. Then each day you look in the mirror to see your best facial features
highlighted. This allows you to walk with your head high, to feel more comfortable
in your own skin and to move forward in ways you may have avoided n the past.

Believe in Your Own Beauty

To achieve a beauty that you can believe in you must make choices to enhance the
beauty that is already there. Everyone deserves to leave home feeling confident and
excited about their own appearance. Permanent makeup is not a way to cover up
the problems; it is way to help your best facial qualities and features to emerge. As
you see this previously hidden part of you walk out into the light of day healing
takes place and this healing energy can spread through the rest of your life.
