How to Evaluate Over the Counter Stocks

Investing in the stock market is a lot of fun but it also takes a lot of skill. Investing in the over-the-counter stock market is another beast entirely! Over-the-counter stocks are generally companies that are much much smaller than a regular publicly traded company on the NASDAQ or the New York Stock Exchange. These companies are very thinly traded, meaning you may not be able to buy or sell the quantity you want on any given day.

Because of this, large sways in prices, both up and down can be completely normal and if you aren't willing or able to handle the psychological effect this may have on you, you've got to seriously reconsider investing in this market. But if you think this is the place for you, I've got a few tips to help you evaluate over-the-counter stocks and I'm going to share them with you in this article today.

First of all, the growth potential of the company is the most important consideration you will ever have, single-handedly. The earnings increases for the company should be at least 10% a year on average for the past six years or else you should stay away from the issue.

Next look at the cash, investments, and accounts receivable as well as the materials and inventories for the company. These things should normally be at least twice the size of the liabilities that are due within the next year for the company. This is because smaller companies need a larger cushion to weather all storms.

Next take a look at working capital per share. For over-the-counter companies the working capital per share should be larger than the market value of the stock. For instance, a $12 stock should be backed by a good solid $14 per share in working capital; at least.

Next, the company should be owned by a least 10 institutional investors as reported in the S&P Stock guide. This may be hard for many OTC stocks but it is important nonetheless.

Next look at the balance sheet for the company. It shouldn't show any deferred operating expenses at all.

Next look at who also owns the stock. You want to look for public ownership that is between 500,000 and 1 million shares of stock. A good indicator is that no more than 10% of the company is controlled by a single individual or institution.

Next look at recent dividends or at recent stock splits. What happened after the dividends were issued? Did the price of the stock continued to increase or did it drop? Increase suggests that the company is financially solid and it's investors feel strongly about it. A decrease suggests that insiders are cashing out and running away... which is a horrible sign and a clear indicator to stay away.

Finding a good over-the-counter stock can be a lot of work but at the same time it can be incredibly rewarding because all it takes is a few of these gems to be uncovered in order to make you a lot of money very quickly!

Mac vs PC Part 1- The Big Difference?

I often get asked the question... What's so special about a Mac, why should I Switch to a Mac, what makes a Mac different?

In this Mac vs PC segment, lets take a look at what's involved in making the "Total Computer Package".

Here is how it's done on a PC:

-Microsoft makes Windows along with select programs, most notoriously MS Office.

-A bunch of other companies design and make the Computers while attempting to conform to Microsoft's current system requirements and hopefully future system requirements so your machine won't be too obsolete.

-Another bunch of companies make up the majority of the rest of the programs for Windows that yet again have to conform to not only Microsoft's requirements but also an ever evolving sea of hardware configurations produced by the same PC Computer companies trying to make Windows compatible PC's.

Here is how Apple does it:

-Apple designs the computer including all hand picked internal hardware.

-The Mac Operating System is built from the ground up by Apple, for Apple computers factoring in current system/sotware requirements and future system/software requirements.

-The majority of pre-installed Applications are Apple's very own, all integrating one with the other, all sharing similarities making the end user experience stable, predictable fun and efficient.

A fitting analogy:
If you where buying a new vehicle, would you prefer that vehicle to be designed top to bottom inside and out with all components tested and retested delivering a finished product that is not only stylish but has performance and reliability to match? Or perhaps you may choose to go with a vehicle that is a conglomeration of miscellaneous bodies, frames, interiors, drive trains, and wiring spliced together producing a product that is not always predictable, stylish or reliable.

I think most reasonable people would choose the vehicle that is well designed and manufactured over the franken-vehicle.

Is it any wonder why so many people are frustrated with their PC computers and are now Switching to Mac or at least taking a long hard look at Switching to Mac? Ad the fact that a Mac makes a great Windows PC to Boot and you have to wonder what's stopping you from getting a Mac?

Maybe the real Big Difference is that people are finally now so much more open to the Mac...

How to Understand Passive-Loss Real Estate Investing Rules

Investing in real estate can be very very good idea. In fact many people turn to real estate to fund a major portion of their personal retirement accounts because they just don't trust the volatility that comes with the stock market. Especially during recession times like we are facing today!

With real estate they get income in the form of rents, and they also get steady appreciation in the form of property price increases over time. These increases usually keep track with inflation or increase greater than inflation which makes them especially attractive for retirement type planning.

But there is one thing you have to understand when investing in real estate and that is the passive loss rules. Almost all rental real estate activity has been categorized by tax reformers as passive activity. What this means is that losses from those passive activities can only be used to offset passive activity income only. You generally can't use it to offset portfolio income such as interest or dividends or capital gains and you certainly can't use it to offset other income such as salaries and wages.

So what exactly does passive mean? Basically it means that the investor doesn't participate in managing the investment in a day-to-day manner. You aren't out there fixing broken plumbing or stoves in your rental houses, for instance. Your main job is to supply the money to buy the thing to begin with and that's pretty much all you have to worry about... that's what passive means.

There are some exceptions. If you ARE primarily managing rental real estate and you have adjusted gross income that is under $100,000 or so then some of your real estate income may be allowed to offset some of your non-passive income. This may have been phased out though by the time you read this article to be sure to check with your accountant or CPA or tax attorney before hand.

Of course, if you don't lose money on your investments; and really that's the goal anyway isn't it, then you don't have a whole lot to worry about when it comes to offsetting passive income losses and if you have most of your retirement income dragged into real estate then that probably means that you don't have significant stock market holdings which means you won't have much dividend income or capital gains income either so at some point this may be come a moot point to you but it's still something that you need to keep in mind and it's something that all real estate investors should be thoroughly schooled in before making any types of investments whatsoever.

Investing in real estate can be a fantastic way to save for your retirement. Just make sure you know all the tax rules backwards and forwards so that you don't get walloped by the big bad IRS...Because the last thing you want to do is spend your glorious retirement years arguing with the tax man during a yearly AUDIT! With a little careful planning, you can make sure that doesn't happen.

A Guide to Designing a High School Musical Themed Bedroom

Disney's High School Musical fever is sweeping the nation! If your child has caught the Zach Effron or Ashley Tisdale bug, then read on. Here's the perfect High School Musical bedroom theme decor that will put her right in the middle of the show! We'll look at accents, bedding and linens, floor covering, wall, art, furniture, lighting and much more.

WALL DECOR: All room decor must necessarily begin with walls. Sure you could just hang up a bunch of posters, but that's pretty boring and they tear easily also. I would reserve on poster for the door front. This lets visitors know that a With the Disney High School Musical theme, we want to create a theater illusion.

1. Paint the walls in a good quality semi-gloss latex paint. Many manufacturers make a children's room paint that washes well. Choose a neutral tan or beige color.

2. Next, select a darker brown or gray. You will use this to create life sized silhouettes of the High School Musical characters on one wall. Enlarge an image and trace the outline. You can also have your child pose as the characters and trace around her.

3. On another wall, create a brick wall pattern like the back wall of a stage. Use a 3/4" wide paint brush to paint lines to look like bricks remember to stagger the vertical lines as bricks do.

4. Purchase some inexpensive bulk silk flower leis. Cut them apart and string them together. Drape them over and around furniture.

5. Purchase a High School Musical wall border to put along the ceiling. These borders are available from many retailers.

LIGHTING: For a Disney High School Musical theme, set up theater style lights. You can do this in several ways.

1. Purchase a small, revolving colored globe light from the novelty lighting section of any retailer.

2. Use a fluorescent branched floor lamp with pink bell shaped shades. The lights shine upward and each branch can be bent in different directions. This kind of lamp is available from most major retail outlets.

3. Hang a string of white holiday lights along the walls.

4. Suspend real or replica theater spotlights in each corner. Most lighting outlets and hardware stores sell versions of spotlights that are simple to hang.

FURNITURE:

1. Bed: Several options are available. The first High School Musical was located in Albuquerque, New Mexico and so the bed may have Mexican theme. High School Musical 2 has a more tropical theme. Using a traditional bed, a tropical theme can be created by hanging a grass table skirt like those used at luaus around the base of the bed for a bed skirt. Tie inflatable palm trees to the posts of the bed.

2. Stage: Your High School Musical lover will need her own stage to practice and rehearse on. Make a small ledge along one wall of the bedroom. Build it about three feet wide and one foot off the floor. Make it as long as you wish. Be sure to support it well. You can also purchase a low table on sturdy metal legs to use as a small stage. These can be found inexpensively in most mass merchandise stores. Whatever you build must be strong enough for the child to dance on. Hang a curtain in front like a theater curtain. You can use a shower curtain in a Hawaiian print. Attach two hooks at the same height on opposite walls. String a length of clothes line around the hooks and hang the curtain from this.

3. Dance barre: Dancers need a practice barre. You can put up a ballet barre easily using a stairway hand railing. Attach this horizontally along a wall. You can attach it to the wall with the stage.

4. Across from the stage, set up a large floor mirror for her to watch herself as she rehearses.

5. Karaoke machine: Since Troy and Gabriella originally met at Karaoke, a small portable machine is a must for your High School Musical decor. Be sure that there is a portable microphone for her to use. This should be on the stage.

6. Costumes and Screen: Gather costumes from theater distributors and second hand store. Hang them on a rack with a screen to change behind.

7. Dresser: Set up a vanity table with a lighted mirror to simulate a theater dressing table. Choose one with drawers to store clothing. Purchase some theater make-up to practice with.

CURTAINS AND BED LINENS: You can find licensed Disney High School Musical accessories in many retail stores. You can also make your own. Fabric and Craft stores sell fabric printed with Disney characters and themes. Purchase cotton fabric for curtains and sheets and polar fleece for blankets and pillows.

Your child can sing and dance her way to stardom with her own Disney High School Musical themed bedroom!
