Plus Sized Woman - More Clothing Choices Now Available

There are so many contradictory rules out there for plus size dress shopping (don't wear stripes, do wear stripes, etc) that it can make what should be a fun shopping excursion a complicated, confusing ordeal. Here, then, are three fail proof fashion rules of thumb, guaranteed to have you buying and wearing dresses with confidence.

First, play to your strengths. Everybody has them, so the most important step a person can take is to identify their own beauty sweet spots. An hourglass (hips and shoulders are equal width, and sandwich a smaller waist) is always one of the most appealing feminine body shapes, so if you are lucky enough to be in possession of one make the most of it and play up your waistline. Wrap dresses, blouses paired with formfitting skirts, and belted dresses will all highlight your curves in a positive, flattering way, and lend you a very feminine shape. Apples (your belly is where you carry your weight) can benefit from doing things that will draw attention to your better features. In the process, you should also be selecting styles that will deemphasize your middle (so, no wrap or belted dresses for you). If you have fantastic legs, choose tops that are more flowy in the middle, but end just above the knee to show off your lovely gams. A gorgeous face? Then choose dresses with interesting necklines - ruffled, cowl neck, etc. These will all draw the focus away from your middle and up to your face.

Don't shy away from prints. It is an old wives' tale that plus size women should stick to solid colors. Prints add variety, and fun. Also, they too, can be used strategically to dictate where peoples' eyes will land. For instance, if you are a pear shape (smaller on top than on bottom), you can pear a printed top with a solid color skirt. This trick will enhance your top, while minimizing your bottom half. The result is a more balanced look.

The right colors are a very important part of make-up and wardrobe. To look your most attractive, try experimenting at home. All that you need to do is stand in front of mirror and try different colors to see what looks the best on you. You do not necessarily need an over the counter makeover at a department store. The clerk's main agenda is to sell products. Your agenda is to look your very best.

Look through your drawers for several swatches of solid color fabric, perhaps some pillowcases, or dishcloths, or scarves. Look into a mirror in a brightly lighted room. Hold the swatches next to your face, one after another, right beneath your chin. You'll see a difference each time you change swatches. While some shades will make you look more radiant, others will make you look washed out. It's not your skin that's at fault, it's the color that's next to it. After you've tried this, you'll understand why you should only wear clothes in truly flattering colors.
